SIGNBOARD-BILLBOARD
for tenor saxophone and thee musicians playing hand-drums, bass-drums and whistles 2004 duration: 7' Signboard-Billboard was commissioned by the FIFA for a performance in the FIFA-Globe. The FIFA-Globe is a tent in the shape of a football that was traveling in Germany from city to city in 2004/05. It served as a venue for various kinds of events, including concerts. In its first version, Signboard-Billboard was premiered in June 2004 in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, during the “Roaring Hooves Festival”. In its second version it was premiered in the FIFA-Globe in September 2004 in Hamburg. Signboard-Billboard is written for processed tenor saxophone and three percussionists playing bassdrums, handdrums and whistles. The music is not completely written out. Most of the percussion playing is based on game-rules that places the players in a competitive situation. The piece alludes to sport in different ways. While the first section has a dynamic and competitive energy, the more quiet second section emphasizes the team-aspect. Again based on rules, all 4 players are passing on sounds to each other, requiring attentiveness and strategic thinking. Back to Instrumental Music
