TIME MACHINE
for sensor-equipped bass clarinet, live electronics and live video composed in 2013 Time Machine refers to time travel as a topic, which in the 20th century has surfaced in many different media, such as movies, cartoons, pop songs or novels. I find it fascinating that in a period when time has more than ever become quantized and rationalized, the subject of time travel expresses the desire to use it as a malleable parameter at our fingertips. In Time Machine I use a mixture of references to cartoons, pop songs and movies from different eras that span a period of roughly 50 years in total. I composed the work in such a way that a non-verbal narrative evolves with these diverse materials, where the bass clarinet acts as a main character. What has been preserved from the original sources is the visual and sonic quality, which conveys the character of the medium of the time in which it was created. Furthermore I have tried to recreate the sense of drama and adventure that has characterized fictions about time travel.
