Keywords: audiovisual art, computer music, visual music, audiovisual analysis

This workshop offers a multifaceted perspective on composing with image and sound

In this Masterclass various approaches to audiovisual composition will be discussed. The first part of this course will offer a historical perspective on this issue, discussing a selection of the following fields:
  • Brief history of visual music and color organs
  • Early experimental film and the relevance of musical metaphors – Hans Richter, Sergej Eisenstein
  • Hand drawn sound on film – Norman McLaren, Guy Sherwin
  • Visual Harmony – John Whitney
  • Oscillograph Art – Robin Fox, Jerobeam Fenderson
  • Early Digital Film – Lilian Schwartz
  • Early Video Art – Steina Vasulka
  • Music Video Clips – R.E.M./Tarsem Singh, Missy Eliott/Dave Meyers
  • Audiovisual Concert works – Fausto Romitelli

In the second part of the workshop methods for the analysis of audiovisual works will be provided in order to offer a more detailed understanding of the coupling of sounds and images. These methods offer sets of criteria which facilitate critical investigations and comparisons between different audiovisual works.
Individual works from the above mentioned list will be studied in detail as examples of different approaches to audiovisual couplings.
